Where Have All the Players Gone?

The World Poker Tour’s annual $25,000 World Championship is one of the premiere events in the world of poker. Arguably, it is the number one event after the World Series of Poker, with no event coming close to taking that second spot. So it was particularly interesting when it was revealed that this year’s WPT World Championship saw a drastic drop in participants.

Whereas the 2011 WPT World Championship brought in 220 players (a surprising increase compared to 2010’s WPT, given that the 2011 event took place after poker’s Black Friday), this year’s event saw the field shrink to a disappointing 152.

It is currently unclear if this is an anomaly or something that may also affect the upcoming World Series of Poker, less than a week away. Time will tell.
