4 Months Pregnant Mother: Visible Bump, Symptoms & Fetal Developments
4th month of pregnancy – Mother’s body changes
Feeling is believing when it comes to pregnancy. When you actually sense your child inside you, it seeps that you are nurturing another human being within you. It is a lifetime experience. Your meals are staying down; your energy level is high.
Your Body Changes during month 4 of Pregnancy
You will look very pregnant now if you were not looking last month. The top tip of the uterus lies just below your belly button. The uterus is about the size of a head of a cabbage.
Due to hormonal changes the thin line of fine hair that runs from your navel down to your pubic turns dark.
What you feel like when you are 4 months Pregnant?
Your appetite may improve this month especially if you have been suffering from NVP symptoms earlier. In this trimester you will gain about eleven to fifteen pounds of weight. You will need a healthy appetite for proper fetal growth. As the uterus crowds your stomach heartburn becomes a constant problem.
Caution when you are 4 months Pregnant
Some tips to prevent and control heartburn are:
- Avoid large meals. Eat smaller, frequent meals.
- Reduce stomach acid by drinking plenty of water between meals.
- Avoid spicy, greasy and fatty foods.
- Keep a trace of whatever you have eaten and determine the foods that cause your heart burn.
- Avoid eating before you go to bed or lying down to rest.
- Use some extra pillows on the bed. This helps ease heartburn while you sleep.
- Avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks. These relax the valve between the stomach and esophagus which may initiate heartburn.
- Use over the counter medications and antacids if the heartburn symptoms don’t reduce. Find out from your doctor about the ideal one for you.
Problems also start occurring in the rear. Many women develop hemorrhoids. It is caused by increased pressure on the rectal veins. As a result they can become blocked trap blood, turn itchy, painful and even protrude from the anus.
Plenty of water, exercise and a high fiber diet prevent constipation and straining with bowel movements. Ease the pain with a topical prescription cream, as prescribed by the doctor, soak in warm tub, use an ice pack and use wipes with witch hazel. If hemorrhoids do occur speak to your doctor about them because they have the potential to develop more than just a minor discomfort. Usually they heal after pregnancy. In some cases clotting occurs and surgery is essential.
Others symptoms of pregnancy that you may start or continue at the 4th month of pregnancy include
- Fatigue
- Bleeding gums
- Gas and/or constipation
- Nausea
- Feeling warm or easily overheated
- Frequent urination
- Skin and hair changes
- Excess mucus and saliva
- Tender and/or swollen breasts
- Mild shortness of breath
- Light-headed feeling or dizziness
- Increase in normal discharge.
Fetal Movements when you are 4 months pregnant
Women who are into their second or third pregnancy are already aware and may recognize the sensation of the little body flexing in the womb. But for first timers the stretch and push of the fetus inside you is quite an experience. The first movements (quickening) may not be felt quite as early. Most women will experience the first flutter by week nineteen.
Pregnancy causes a lot of gastrointestinal symptoms. So the movements described as butterfly wings, block of jiggling Jell-O, gas or bubble movements or gentle nudges of a baby go unnoticed. It is only when baby becomes persistent with her movements for a few days that the movement is noticed.
Your baby is now establishing behavioral patterns. When you are up and moving about she may doze off. But when you lay down to take rest she wakes up and moves. Once the baby starts moving regularly the sensation becomes a second nature. You should experience four or more movements in an hour on an average. A sudden decrease in fetal activity or three or lesser movement signifies everything is not okay with the baby. Call your doctor immediately when such situation arises.
The Shape You Are In when you are 4 months into your pregnancy
From the time you will be showing a protruding belly. People will start predicting the gender of the baby. They presume that it is a girl if the tummy is high and it’s a boy if the tummy is low. However only your posture, build and pregnancy history is responsible for the way you carry. Women who had a previous pregnancy will have flexible abdominal muscles and therefore often carry lower. The position of the baby also influences the shape of your body.

Help so confused!
Hey Lisa – Its Michelle from North Miami Beach. I am 4 months pregnant and you can’t always trust pregnancy test because sometimes it does not work the right way. I took one with my first baby and it said negative and I was not so. So talk to your Doctor about your pregnancy.
I did three pregnancy tests and they showed negative and the fourth one showed that I was pregnant. The test picked it up after 6 weeks and as for my friend 3 months. Did you try first response pregnancy kit? They are better than many other.
My wife is 4 months into her pregnancy. She keeps crying for a few minutes everyday. Would that be harmful for our child? Is this normal for some women to feel so emotional when she is 4 months pregnant?
I don’t think it’s bad if u want to know your wife’s condition, your wife is undergoing an emotional period, please try and understand her well so that u can cope up in all the situation . . all the best
I am 16 weeks pregnant and I have a problem with my eating order. I just cant stop eating and most of the time I eat my tummy still feels empty and I also wake up at early hours in the morning to eat. Should I be worried about my babies weight because I have not put on any weight not even on my breasts.
I had a similar problem about 10wks, I was always hungry I couldn’t keep my myself form food, it got worse by 15weeks then it developed to stomach acids they were unbearable, I even became so sick but my doc said to take tums, I did but did not help I tried different brands of ant acids from malox to the rest but still dint help but at 16 weeks it went away on its own I now feel better and not always hungry as I was before
I am four months pregnant and since my pregnancy, I have developed some virginal thrash. Is that normal? My discharge is brown but does not have that bad smell. I did consult with my gny/obs about it and he gave me some anti-biotics and they did not work for me. They only made me sick. I felt nauseas after I took one. What other options do u have for me?
I am 3 months 2 weeks pregnant and everything is quiet in my tummy. I feel uneasy, and its my first pregnancy. I have not noticed any movement, and I do not vomit. I just sleep a lot. But since I got into my fourth month or pregnancy nothing seems to be happening. What could be the reason?
If the doctor doesnt seem worried than don’t worry about it. I didn’t show untill my fifth month. also some women won’t feel anything. and some feel as early as 16 weeks. I’m 20 weeks and just barely feeling movements.
I am 17. It’s been 4 months since I think I had intercourse. The first 2 months afterwards, I did not have my period. But these last two months I did. But the were very irregular and short. I’ve had lots of pregnancy symptoms, which i’ve just noticed recently. Do you think I may be pregnant?
Yes, you should definitely take a pregnancy test. If you are pregnant you would be far enough along for it to show up in an at home test. As for the irregular short periods, I experienced the same thing during my first pregnancy, Its called spot bleeding. I mistook them for periods too and did not end up finding out that I was pregnant until I was out of my first trimester!
I am a married woman with 3 kids and expecting my fourth, and yes I am 4 month pregnant too. Just had a quick glimpse at all the questions and these are my answers acording to my pregnancies and experiences:
movement: for those who havent felt any movement at this stage, sometimes movement can be miss read as wind in your tummy, don’t worry it will hapen with a bang when your least expecting it. Try lying on your back and just breathing from your abdomain and RELAX.
Toilet trouble: Try eating alot of fruit and as much fibre as you can and most importantly don’t strain goin to the loo it will come out when its ready, I know it can be painful and uncomfortable thats pregnancy for you.
Eating: this is one I can’t explain but I did suffer with the same thing, and when i had the child it continued as I ended up in a bad routine and gained almost four stone. I went from 10stone to 14stone. my only advise would be to eat at certain times during the day and get into a good healthy diet.
Vaginal Thrush: Its very common to get thrush if the fist anti biotics didnt work there are many different types out there see your gp again.
And men, Do not worry about anything. If there is a problem, your partner will let you know soon
Sit back and enjoy it now, because when that wee bundle of joy comes along, you wont get a minute!
This is my first pregnancy. I am 5 months pregnant. I hear a vibrating sound from my belly. Does this indicate that my baby is moving? I have pain in my left buttocks. What would be the reason for the pain in the buttocks?
Vibrating sound- it means your baby is moving around and about enjoying the space in the uterus. I felt the same way too and believe me it the best thing ever.
Pain in the buttocks: Means that you have a sciatic nerve pain. It lies below the uterus and runs straight down to the sole of our feet, the pain is felt depending on the babies positioning and it can get worse if the baby sticks to the same angle. Visit your doctor for examination.
Hi I am Julia. I am 4 or 5 months pregnant, and i definitely feel baby movement 🙂 Uterus is just a tad bit above my belly button, I tried telling my mom I was pregnant.. but she wouldn’t believe me because I am not that big, and all three pregnancy tests have came back negative. So what do I do? I really want to see an u/s and have proper check ups and etc, but I can’t get anyone to believe me 🙁 oh I am 16 btw. How do I convince my mom??
If you really are feeling something tell your mom that you need to go to the doctor, once you are there you can tell your mom that you need to talk to the doctor alone. You are of the age that you can talk to your doctor and it is personnel so he cant tell her. Then ask him if he can take blood from you to tell you if you are pregnant or not. You do need to get this checked out. Hopefully that helps you.
I am 16 weeks and I started feeling the baby flutter about a week ago. It’s my friend pregnancy and it’s totally amazing. I can’t wait to get my 1st ultra sound done, but for some reason my medical hasn’t gone through yet so I am still waiting.
First of all let me congratulate you for your pregnancy, please relax as you have entered 16 weeks .this is the time where many parts of the baby are formed. You should take some additional dietary supplement, vitamins, lesser of stress. Mild exercise an ultrasound is necessary for viewing proper baby development. You should also do blood grouping, and certain blood tests as your doctor advises to you.
Hi, I’m Lucy and I’m 41/2 months pregnant. It is my fourth child but I haven’t felt the baby moving yet, this has never happened in any of my other pregnancies before! Is this normal or should I be concerned!
T0his is normal, I know that a lot of times we feel the baby move in the first trimester but don’t get scared. Just because you don’t feel him or her yet doesn’t mean anything. Sometimes they take up to four months to start moving.
I am 3 months pregnant and I am worried because I do not feel the movement of my baby yet. This is my fourth pregnancy and previously I felt it while I was still 3 months. Is there something wrong or should I wait until the end of fourth month?
hi there. im 18 yrs old and i am 4 months pregnant. i can feel my baby moving inside of me. makes me want to cry sometimes, just knowing that my body is capable of carrying a baby. my boyfriend doesnt want this child. but i dont think theres anything i can do but to have this baby. im scared to tell anyone though. i have yet to tell a single person. i basically dont know what to do about anything. my tummy is barely starting to show. and i know everyone will figure it out. and the other thing is that my sister is pregnant and shes all happy and excited and i feel if i say anything about my pregnancy that i will just steal that from her. i dont want to upset anyone, but i have the feeling that i will disappoint a lot of people. im scared. help me?
Hi. I am scared too. I couldn’t bring myself to tell my sister at her birthday, same thing, stealing the day.
It is hard to tell some people. It is good to examine the reasons behind why you don’t want to tell some people. Maybe you think of yourself as inferior or not as important as your sister and others? it helps you to get to know yourself. Don’t be too hard on yourself. You have a long life yet!
And really you just have to hold the confidence in yourself that you can do it. It is ok.
Maybe it is normal for your boyfriend to react like that. He is probably scared too.
Your sister will probably be very happy though and it will be a good time for you to support each other.
If you haven’t been to the doctor you probably should… Good Luck to you! Its all a bit new, hey!!
Hi I have 2 daughters 19 and 17 who are pregnant 4 months and 5 months and still living at home. It was a shock at first, but these are my grandchildren, and I could not love them any less. So what if your sister is pregnant. So you needed to feel the joy of pregnancy just as much as she does? Tell someone; let other people feel your joy also. Your sister should be happy for you just like you are happy for her.
You say your boyfriend does not want this baby but ultimately its your decision. He should have used protection if he really did not want a baby! I know it must be scary but once you tell your close family/friends or whoever will be a support system for you, then you will feel relieved and not alone. Do not worry about your sister. If she really loves you she will understand that its not like you planned this. She will understand that you need her. Wish you all the best! I am 4 months pregnant too!
I am 12 and I think I might be pregnant. I have been feeling weird on my left side. It feels like a baby because every now and then I get cramps. Then I eat a small snack or I get a warm towel and put on my belly. Then I am ok for the day. I have been feeling sick when I get up in the morning and back also hurts.
I am four months pregnant and I have a big lump on the right side of my stomach right next to my hip. My doctors clinic is closed (being a Saturday) so I was wondering if someone could help me out. Should I make an emergency appointment to get checked out or wait it out? It is very painful.
I had unprotected sex with my friend 4 months ago, she had seen her period 2 times after then but missed it the 3 month. Up till now she have not gotten any pregnancy sign. Could it be that she is 4 months pregnant.
I have missed 5 periods now, while on birth control pills. I had some vomiting a few months ago and over the last few weeks I get nauseous after I start eating sometimes and can’t finish.
I’m 24 years old, never been pregnant before. The first 2 months I missed my period, I took pregnancy tests which came back negative. My weight for most of last year (2009) was around 105-108lbs. I gained weight going into 2010 and now I’m around 115. If I were pregnant, wouldn’t someone with my frame be showing by now at 5’3″ and 115 lbs.? I don’t carry my weight evenly, it always goes to the “tyre” I have around my middle.
I am 5 months pregnant. Before I got pregnant I had this habit of sleeping prone position. The habit continues. I am pregnant and I am still sleeping prone position.
I am worried I may be hurting my baby, may be affect the baby’s breathing.
I am 27 and this is my second baby on the way and I am 4 months along. I have been feeling a lot of pressure almost in my pelvic area. It’s like a mild constant cramp and my pelvic bone is sore. Has anyone felt anything like this, this early in pregnancy? And what did you do for it?
I am 17 and I last had intercourse with my partner 5 months ago. At the moment he is overseas so have not had sex since. I have noticed that I am gaining weight in my belly and it feels like I have gas but not sure whether it’s that or I am pregnant. I need advice if I am pregnant. I would be nearly 5 months. I have had only these symptoms: very itchy breasts, fatigue and nausea just this month. Some food smells make me feel sick. Also been moody and have not got my periods which I was due for on the 26th of September. Prior to this though, I got my period normally. I am also worried because I want to do a HPT, but if it is negative that means I have just gained weight for no reason and I am just fat. Also, my belly is not hard like other women. I am one for always sucking my belly in but now it hurts to do that. Does that mean I could be pregnant.
If you have got periods after you had sex with your partner 5 months ago, then it’s unlikely that you are pregnant. You can still go through the pregnancy test. As far as putting on weight, you can start getting back into shape with proper diet and some exercises.
My doctor said that the stomach does not look like I am 16 weeks pregnant. He said that baby is not developed and referred for scanning and gave tablets i.e. Folwise, Nidagen-100, Doxinate. Is this the right medication and I hope my baby is safe and healthy.
Good afternoon, thank you for the nice information that I have read from you, I am on my 4th month of pregnancy and am happy for it.
The first month I had bleed but immediately the same hour I went and saw the dr. I was given some medicine and the same time a scan was done, And the bleeding stopped.
I am now 4 months but no movements of the baby but the weight is increasing. My question is; what is the maximum weight required for a pregnant woman and what should I eat more?
The last time I had sex was in July 2011. I have gotten regular periods after that. But last month my period was kind of weird. I was on it for 4 days instead of 7. My stomach has bloated. Can anyone please tell me what this means?
That happened to me too in my first pregnancy. It’s almost brownish right? You are probably pregnant and when I finally went to the Gynecologist, she told me I was more than 2 months pregnant. With your case I would go get tested but in a professional medical setup and not by self fat home.
I am 19 and if I am pregnant, I would be about 4 months.
I have had the ‘Implanon’ contraceptive rod in for just over three years and am getting it taken out next week. I’ve had a few complications since being on this contraceptive, such as irregular periods, anemic symptoms and excessive bleeding, mainly since the middle of this year. Before I had sex 4 months ago, I had my period on and off for about 5 or 6 weeks and have not had it since. The first couple weeks after, I felt really sick and could barely eat. When I get up in the morning I would automatically feel sick. That stopped after a while so I never really took much notice and ignored it. Since then, my tummy has been really bloated and I am unable to suck it in. I have shortness of breath and get exhausted easily but then I have moments where I seem to just become re-energized for no particular reason. I felt a movement on the right lower side of my tummy a couple weeks ago, like a little flutter feeling but have not felt it since. Decided to take a pregnancy test which claims to be doctor-accurate and it came up ‘Not pregnant’ though i am still getting these symptoms. My tummy is getting bigger, and I know the Implanon can sometimes affect results. What is the likelihood of me actually being pregnant? Someone I know took a pregnancy test while on the same contraceptive and when they took it out she was 6 months pregnant. I’ve had alcohol and everything so I am worried that if I am pregnant there could be something wrong with the baby. Could it be that I was pregnant before and now I am not and still be getting these symptoms? Or something entirely different?
I am 21 years old and I took 2 pregnancy tests and both are positive. For first 3 months I did not feel that I am pregnant and did not even vomit and didn’t have morning sickness but I do feel cramps on my buttocks down to my feet. In the 4th month I started to vomit sometimes after breakfast and sometimes evening. My partner says that my breasts are bigger than usual and my nipples is more prominent and sensitive to touch. But I still have this question in my mind if I am pregnant because I don’t find any small bump in my belly, and when I try to listen the heartbeat of my baby, I don’t hear anything. I have missed my 4 periods and tests are positive. Should I go to the doctor first or have an ultrasound done?
I am 4 months pregnant but still I am suffering from headache almost 3 times a week. What should I do to avoid this kind of feeling its so painful.
Check your blood pressure. Stay relaxed and drink enough water. You should have sound sleep for 8 hours. Avoid unnecessary stress and strain. Go for early morning walk. Also check your eyes for refractory error.
